From the beginning, Kansas has achieved success by playing original music. What once was a ‘garage band’ from Topeka, Kansas has turned into a record selling rock band. With eight Gold albums, three sextuple-Platinum albums, one platinum live album and a million dollar single, “Dust in the Wind;” Kansas has sold out arenas and stadiums throughout North America, Europe, and Japan.

After the groundbreaking and universally successful 2010 KANSAS Collegiate Symphony Tour, legendary rock band KANSAS is not only continuing, but expanding the tour for the fall of 2011. The 2011 KANSAS Collegiate Symphony Tour will again help raise funds and awareness for college and university music programs.

Original member and drummer, Phil Ehart had this to say about last year’s concerts.“KANSAS and all the school symphonies just hit it off big time! The only people having more fun then us were all the students playing on stage with us! And considering all the money that was raised to help the music departments, everyone considered it a real success! We know this year will be bigger and better!”

There are only a select number of dates a year where Kansas performs with University orchestras. Paul Bauer, Director of the NIU School of Music says, “we are tremendously excited that Kansas has chosen NIU for one of its rare orchestra concerts. “ Kansas recently started playing with Universities in 2010. “Just imagine Kansas playing hits like “Point of No Return” and Cary On Wayward Son” with the power of NIU’s great Philharmonic Orchestra” says Bauer. This will truly be a CLASSIC show! Rich Holly the Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts adds, “As professionals, these students may play alongside well-known stars of music, but it is a unique that as students they would have this opportunity; it’s one more way we can help to prepare our students for what they’ll likely encounter as professionals.”

Kansas performing live with the NIU Philharmonic Orchestra is not only an experience for current students but also for alumni! Homecoming only happens once a year and alumni from all over the country come back to their roots at NIU. What better way to experience Homecoming that a big NIU win and a Kansas concert.  Joe Matty, Director of Alumni Associations says, “Bringing Kansas the weekend of homecoming is showing our alumni that NIU events are not just for students, but for them too. This event is special because of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, we are showcasing our students and their talent for a truly amazing homecoming experience.”

NIU Homecoming 2011 will create memories for the Huskie community that will last a lifetime. The opportunity for NIU Philharmonic Orchestra to perform with Kansas is truly and amazing opportunity. “We are excited to be partnering with the College of Music and the Alumni association to bring what we think will be an outstanding homecoming concert” says John Gordon, Director of the NIU Convocation Center.
